Visit the home of one of the greatest historians of 20th Century Scandinavian Design, Professor Oda Noritsugu.

Located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Professor Oda has amassed a mind-blowing collection of Scandinavian Modernism, including rare forms and prototypes from Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, Hans Bolling, just to name a few. For a man who claims not to be a collector, He has one of the world’s most remarkable assemblages of chairs (1,200, over half of them Danish) as well as a fine stash of tables (70), lighting fixtures (100), cabinets (50), cutlery (1,000 pieces) and pottery (2,500) in his home.

Professor Oda lives and works in Asahikawa and teaches design at a satellite campus of Tokai University there.

Independent Exploration

From the architect; Inspired by my Mother’s recent move to Niseko, a resort in Japan that attracts many skiers during the winter. In this type of climate, the building must function during varying seasonal environments. During the winter, you get snow levels that would enclose a typical house.

A typical residence will also waste a lot of energy heating and cooling noccupied spaces. The Hover House is designed to control the different thermal zones within the building. These zones make up the core of the building and are controlled by sliding doors, similar to traditional Shoji screens. The circulation wraps around the periphery of these zones to conserve energy that is typically wasted on transitional spaces like circulation. During summer nights this space can also be used to flush the hot air out of the shell of the building without disturbing the interior zones. There is no need to waste energy to heat or cool the entire house, especially in a residence where the number of occupants will often vary.

The adaptive nature of this building not only conserves valuable energy, but also allows for flexible control over spaces, views, and privacy.

Finally, the over-sized cantilever can be opened up to the sky; exposing the bath to the outdoors while maintaining a level of privacy. This, again, was inspired by the Japanese Roten-buro, or exterior bath - Makoto Shibuya

Odashima Guitars | Handmade from the forest of Hokkaido

Guitar craftsman Naoto Odashima hails from the small town of "Wassamu" located in northern Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido and runs the guitar studio "Odashima Guitars" in the heart of the forest.

His passion for making jazz guitars, along with his high quality of work, have earned him the trust of many musicians and specialty shops.

The primary material used in production is lumber from Hokkaido. Trees in Hokkaido are highly valued by craftsman for their beautiful tree ring patterns, caused by the naturally cold soils they grow in. Spruce in particular is valued above all other woods in Hokkaido because of the incredible resonance the wood provides.

Jun Igarashi organises artist-studio home within connected wooden blocks

Called the ‘bending house in oasa’, the artist studio-cum-residence is a project by Hokkaido architect Jun Igarashi. Located in Ebetsu – a suburb of sapporo – the geometric property is visualised as a series of wooden panel clad boxes. Set at different angles, the volumes have been orientated to receive optimum daylight, privacy, while giving private and communal spaces a clear sense of hierarchy.

The house sits on a slight incline of 0.6 meters; the folding and positioning of the three blocks have effected the organization of the internal programs. The large artist studio receives north light and along with the living room, both situated in the larger volumes separated by small box serving as the main entrance. Inside, concrete floors and timber-beamed ceilings continue all the way through. The double-height room features a mezzanine hosting the office space connected by a wooden bridge structure.
